Celebrating the works of Swiss and European artists, the many art galleries of Lausanne are both widespread and varied. Located on the Place de la Cathedrale and close to the Rue Centrale, Lausanne's Museum of Applied Contemporary Art and Design is often known simply as the 'MUDAC' and contains an interesting selection of both functional sculptures and more traditional pieces.Within the very heart of Old Town Lausanne, the Musée Cantonal des Beaux Arts (Cantonal Museum of Fine Art) can be found on the Place de la Riponne and within the magnificent Palais de Rumine. A number of highly acclaimed artists have their works displayed here, such as Cézanne, Matisse and Renoir, while in the summer months, regular exhibitions are dedicated solely to specific artists.
The Musée de Design et d'Arts Appliqués Contemporains (Lausanne Design Museum and of Applied Contemporary Arts) has recently moved to the rather grand location at Gaudard House. The various galleries here feature an interesting mixture of both permanent and visiting exhibitions. Enjoying a parkland setting in central Lausanne, the Musée de l'Elysée (Elysée Museum) is also worth looking out for and has become the leading photographic art gallery in the whole of Switzerland.
